Turning Songkran Waste into Sustainable Furniture
- The Songkran Festival, held from April 13 to 15, 2026, once again brought joy to Thailand as locals and tourists celebrated the Thai New Year with lively water splashing to beat the summer heat.
- While the festival creates a vibrant atmosphere across the country, it also leaves behind a significant environmental challenge. Streets are often covered with large amounts of waste, particularly plastic debris such as discarded water guns.
- In response, an innovative team has stepped in to tackle this issue by transforming plastic waste into eco-friendly products. Their initiative focuses on recycling used plastic water guns into durable furniture, including tables and chairs.
- The process begins with collecting discarded plastic water guns from garbage sites. The materials are then carefully separated, removing screws, aluminum components, and springs. The remaining plastic is shredded into small pieces before being placed into molds.
- Next, the plastic is heated in an oven at 180°C and compressed using a hydraulic machine to form solid panels. The surface is then smoothed with a wood planer, and finally, the finished pieces are assembled into functional furniture.
- This creative approach not only helps reduce waste after the festival but also promotes sustainable solutions for a cleaner future.
