Landfill Fire broke out at Khaun Lang Town Municipality, Hat Yai district, Songkhla province

On 23 March 2026, a fire broke out at the landfill under Khuan Lang Town Municipality in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. Smoke from the site was visible from central areas of Hat Yai, over 10 km away. Driven by strong winds, the fire rapidly spread across the landfill and into surrounding areas.

After 7 consecutive days of firefighting efforts, smoke continues to rise from several areas of the landfill, causing ongoing nuisance and disturbance to nearby communities.

The fire is believed to have originated from long-term decomposition of waste at the base of the landfill under anaerobic conditions, which generates methane, a highly flammable gas. Combined with rising temperatures during the summer, the risk of ignition at the bottom of the landfill increased significantly, making the fire particularly difficult to extinguish at its source.

Semi-aerobic landfill can reduces methane generation deep within the landfill—significantly lowering risk of fire while also minimizing odor!
