Phuket's Waste Crisis, total amount over 1,200 ton per day

  • Phuket Integrated Waste Management Center, operated by Phuket City Municipality, is receiving an average of 1,200-1,300 tons of municipal solid waste per day, which can be increased to over 1,400 tons per day during the peak season.
  • At, present, the center consists of 1 Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant with incineration capability of 700 tons per day. Excess waste is disposed of in the landfill, which remains in operation despite having already reached its full capacity. Landfill mining has been carried out in order to extend the landfill lifespan.
  • Meanwhile, a new WtE plant is under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with incineration capacity of 500 tons per day. The total waste disposal capacity will increase to 1,200 tons per day, but this may still be insufficient considering the anticipated increase in waste generation associated with the future growth of the city
  • Furthermore, the continued overuse of the landfill has resulted in pollution and unpleasant odors affecting the nearby communities and the image of the city. EM spray has been applied in attempt to reduce the odors.
